Abstract

The role of education in promoting religious harmony and tolerance is a crucial yet often underexplored aspect of social cohesion in Pakistan. Pakistan’s diverse religious makeup, with Islam as the predominant religion, along with smaller minorities such as Hindus, Christians and Sikhs, the potential of education in bridging religious divides becomes ever more significant. The growing trend of intolerance and extremism, which is often perpetuated through biased curricula, lack of interfaith dialogue and social disparities. This research aims to identify the ways in which educational institutions can promote a culture of religious tolerance and mutual respect. Methodologically, the study employs a qualitative approach with the documents of educational policymakers, religious scholars and teachers, alongside quantitative surveys conducted with students from various regions and schools. The study objectives to assess the current state of religious education in Pakistan, analyze its impact on students' attitudes toward different religions and evaluate the potential for curriculum reforms that could foster religious harmony. The expected findings of this research suggest that while there are existing efforts to include interfaith education, there is a significant gap in curriculum inclusivity and teacher training. The study anticipates that a reformed educational approach, incorporating values of tolerance, mutual respect and religious pluralism, could significantly reduce religious conflicts in Pakistan. Furthermore, it is expected that fostering a more inclusive, open-minded educational environment would not only enhance religious harmony but also contribute to national integration and peaceful coexistence.
